LOWER BACK PAIN
Lower back pain is a
very common musculoskeletal disorder which affects almost everyone at
some point in their lives. Low back pain actually accounts for more days
lost from work than almost any other common medical condition or injury.
This type of pain pain may be either chronic or acute. More often than
not, despite the intense pain these injuries or conditions cause, lower
back pain most often shows very significant improvement within a few
weeks time with with just conservative treatment measures.
The causes of most cases of lower back pain are usually due to benign
musculoskeletal problems. This is often referred to as non-specific low
back pain. This is often caused by either a sprain or strain in the
muscles of the low back and injury to the soft tissues. This pain often
occurs suddenly during physical load or overexertion of the low back.
The lumbar or lower back region of the spine is made up of five
vertebrae, known as L1 to L5. Between these vertebrae lie intervertebral
discs which act as cushions, preventing the vertebrae from rubbing
together and also protecting the spinal cord. Nerves stem from the
spinal cord providing muscles with sensations and other messages.
Stability of the spine is provided through ligaments and muscles of the
back, lower back and abdomen.
